 Jumper Setting
 ==============

x = Jumper set at factory

On the Drive's PCB (Printed Circuit Board), there are six pairs of
jumper pins that allow you to control drive operation. When you
change a jumper setting, the new setting is in effect when the drive
 is next powered on.

Numerous options controlled be the SCSI commands also affect the
 operation of the drive.

 Jumper Options

  +---------+-----------+-------------------------------------------+
  | Jumper | Setting | Description |

  +---------+-----------+-------------------------------------------+

 SS Self-Seek Jumper
 --------------------
Quantum ships the ProDrive LPS 120/240S hard disk drive from the
factory with the Self-Seek (SS) test option disabled; that is, with-
out a jumper installed across the pins labeled SS. To enable the
Self-Seek test, install a jumper accross the SS pins. Alternatively,
the host can initiate a Self-Seek test by issuing a SEND DIAGNOSTIC
command, with the self-test bit set to one.

When power is applied to the drive with the Self-test enabled, the
drive initiates a Self-Seek test. The SCSI-bus device identification
(SCSI ID) currently selected determines the Self-Seek test performed.

With the SCSI ID set to six, its default value, the drive performs
random seeks, verifying the cylinder ID after every seek. The random
seeks continue as long as power is applied to the drive or until the
 drive encounters a seek error.

If the SCSI ID is set to a value other than six, the drive executes
seeks in a butterfly pattern. Each butterfly seek pattern:

  1. Starts at cylinder zero.

  2. Seeks to the last data cylinder.

  3. Performs successive seeks over a progressively narrower range of
cylinders - incremeting by three at the lower limit of the range
and decrementing by three at the upper limit of the range - until
the drive seeks to the middle cylinder.

  4. Performs successive seeks over a progressively wider range
cylinder - decrementing by three at the lower limit of the range
and incrementing by three at the upper limit of the range.

  5. Ends with a seek to cylinder zero.

Seeks in this butterfly pattern continue as long as power is applied
to the drive or until the drive encounters a seek error.

During the Self-Seek test, the drive can execute any command.

 EP Enable Parity Jumper
 ------------------------
At the factory, Quantum configures the ProDrive LPS 120/240S hard
disk drive with parity checking enabled; that is, with a jumper
installed across the pins labeled EP. To disable parity checking,
remove the jumper from the EP pins.

The Enable Parity (EP) option controls parity checking of data across
the SCSI bus. With parity checking enabled, the drive performs parity
checking. With parity checking disabled, the drive continues to
generate parity information, but does not perform parity checking.

 WS Wait/Spin Jumper
 --------------------
Quantum configures the ProDrive LPS 120/240S hard disk drive with the
Wait/Spin (WS) option disabled; that is, without a jumper installed
across the pins labeld WS. To enable WAit/Spin option, install a
 jumper across the WS pins.

At a power on reset, with the Wait/Spin option disabled, the motor
starts to spin automatically, and the drive will become ready to
perform read or write operations without the need for a start
 command.

At a power on or reset, with the Wait/Spin option enabled, the host
must send a START/STOP UNIT command to activate the drive motor. The
Wait/Spin option permits power sequencing, to prevent an overload of
the host's power supply due to simultaneous, peak start-up current
demands from multiple devices. Once the drive receives a START/STOP
UNIT command, it will become ready to perform read or write opera-
 tions.

 A2/A1/A0 SCSI-Bus Device Identification
 ----------------------------------------
Used in combination, the jumper settings across pins A2, A1, and A0
determine the ProDrive LPS 120/240S hard disk drive's SCSI-bus device
identification (SCSI ID). By default, Quantum configures the drive
with a SCSI ID of six; that is, with jumpers installed across the
pins labeld A2 and A1, and no jumper installed across the pins
 labeled A0.

   +----------+-----------------------+
   | SCSI ID | Jumpers |
   | | A2 | A1 | A0 |
   +----------+-------+-------+-------+
   | 0 | OPEN | OPEN | OPEN |
   | 1 | OPEN | OPEN | CLOSED|
   | 2 | OPEN | CLOSED| OPEN |
   | 3 | OPEN | CLOSED| CLOSED|
   | 4 | CLOSED| OPEN | OPEN |
   | 5 | CLOSED| OPEN | CLOSED|
   |x 6 | CLOSED| CLOSED| OPEN |
   | 7 | CLOSED| CLOSED| CLOSED|
   +----------+-------+-------+-------+

The SCSI bus supports up to eigth devices, including the host system.
A device's identification number determines its priority and must be
 unique in the system.

 Terminating Resistors
 ---------------------
At the factory, Quantum installs three resistor networks in socket on
the drive PCB (Printed Circuit Board) to terminate the SCSI bus.
Only the first device - usually the host - and the last device an a
SCSI bus should contain terminating resistors. When installing the
ProDrive LPS 120/240S hard disk drive in any other position on the
SCSI bus, remove the terminating resistors.

 Orientation
 -----------
The mounting holes on the ProDrive LPS 120/240S hard disk drive
allow the drive to be mounted in any orientation. For mounting, #6-32
 UNC screws are recommended.

CAUTION: The Printed-Circuit Board (PCB) is very close to the mount-
ing holes. Do not exceed the specified length for the mounting
screws. The specified screw length allows full use of the mounting-
hole threads, while avoiding damaging or placing unwanted stress on
the PCB. To avoid stripping the mounting-hole threads, the maximum
torque applied to the screws must not exceed 8 inch-pounds.

 Clearance
 ---------
Clearance from the drive - except mounting surfaces - to any other
surface must be 0.10 inches minimum.

 Ventilation
 -----------
The ProDrive LPS 120/240S hard disk drive operates without a
cooling fan, provided the ambient air temperature does not exceed
 131*F (55*C).

 J3 DC Power Connector
 ---------------------
The drive's DC power connector (J3) is a 4-pin Ranoda Electronics
Connector (06300010-04-1), or equivalent, mounted on the back edge of
 the Printed-Circuit Board (PCB).

 Recommended connectors and their numbers:

 4-pin connector (P3): AMP P/N 1-480424-0 or equivalent

 Loose-piece contacts: AMP P/N 61173-4 or equivalent

Strip contacts: AMP P/N 350078-4 or equivalent

  pin 1 +12 VDC
pin 2 +12 Volts Return (Ground)
  pin 3 + 5 Volts Return (Ground)
  pin 4 + 5 VDC

 Note:
Labels indicate the pin numbers on the connector. Pins 2 and 3 are
 connected on the drive.

 J2 SCSI Connector
 ------------------
The SCSI cable connector (J2) on the ProDrive 120/240S hard disk
drive is a 50-pin universal header. A key slot on the header prevents
the incorrect installation of the header connector on the SCSI cable.
To prevent the header connector on the SCSI cable from being plugged
in backwards, use only a keyed header connector.

Recommended header connectors and their part numbers:

50-pin connector (w strain relief) AMP P/N 1-746195-2 or equivalent

50-pin connector (w/o strain relief) AMP P/N 1-499508-2 or equivalent

 Power Sequencing
 ----------------
You may apply the power in any order or manner, or short or open
either the power or power return line with no loss of data or damage
to the disk drive. However, data may be lost in the sector being
written at the time of power loss. The drive can withstand transient
voltages of +10% to -100% from nominal while powering up or down.

 Disk Caching
 ------------
The ProDrive LPS 120/240S hard disk drive incorporates DisCache
a 256K disk cache, to enhance drive performance. This
integrated feature can significantly improve system throughput. Read
and write cahcing can be enabled or disabled using the MODE SELECT
 command.

 Formatted Capacity
 ------------------
At the factory, the ProDrive LPS 120/240S receives a low-level
format that creates the actual tracks and sectors on the drive.

 Reliability
 -----------
Mean Time Between Failures (MTBF): 70,000 Power On Hours (POH),
                                    typical usage

 Preventive Maintenance (PM): Not required

Mean Time To Repair (MTTR): 30 minutes

 Start/Stop: 20,000 cycles (minimum)

 Error Detection and Correction
 ------------------------------
Quantum ProDrive LPS 120/240S hard disk drives implement 96-bit
single and double burst Reed-Solomon error correction techniques.
Single burst errors of up to 24 bits within one sector can be
corrected "on-the-fly", in real time as they occur, allowing a high
degree of data integrity with no impact to the drive's performance.

 Defect Management
 -----------------
The ProDrive LPS 120/240S allocates one sector per cylinder as
a spare. In the factory, the media is scanned for defects. If a
sector on a cylinder is found to be defective, the address of the
sector is added to the drive's defect list. Sectors located
physically subsequent to the defective sector are assigned logical
block addresses such that a sequential ordering of logical blocks
results. This inline sparing technique is employed in an attempt to
eliminate slow data transfer that would result from a single defect-
 ive sector on a cylinder.

If more than one sector is found defective on a cylinder, the inline
sparing technique is applied only to the first sector. The remaining
defective sectors are replaced with the nearest available spare
sectors on nearby cylinders. Such an assignment of additional
replacement sectors from nearby sectors rather than having a central
pool of spare sectors is an attempt to minimize the motion of the
actuator and head that otherwise would be needed to find a replace-
ment sector. The result is minimal reduction of data throughput.
