When jumpered, the corresponding bit is a 1.
Through the SCSI bus supports connection of up to seven devices,
communication can occur only between two SCSI devices at a time. Each
device has an assigned ID bit; that bit establishes device priority
on the SCSI bus.
When two SCSI devices communicate, one acts initiator and the other
as a traget. The initiator originates an operation and the target
performs the operation specified by the initiator. An initiator can
address up to seven other logical units (LUNs) attached to one
target. The drive has only one logical unit attached (LUN=0).

ID of 6. This ID designation assures sufficient jumpers are available
for any address except 7 (which is usually reserved for the host
system).

Recommended Mounting Configuration
----------------------------------
The drive may be mounted in any attitude using 6-32 screws with 1/8"
maximum penetration. Allow adequate ventilation to the drive to
ensure reliable operation over the operating temperature range.
Host Equipment
--------------
Maxtor builds hard disk drives to meet the highest quality standards.
Like all system peripherals, they depend on host equipment for
adequate power and environment to realize their full performance
potential and to operate in compliance wit applicable industry and
governmental regulations. Give special attention to: power
distribution, shielding, audible noise control, temperature
regulation, and electro-static discharge.
Interface Termination
---------------------
SCSI devices require proper interface termination. On a SCSI bus
daisy chain, terminate only the first and last device. All devices
between the first and last devices must have their terminators
removed. As shipped, the interface signal lines are terminated with
two removable 220/330 ohm resistor network packs.
A dot on the terminator (RP601-RP602) indicates the position of pin
1; pin 1 is also identified as the terminator pin farthest from power
connector. For the drive to function correctly, orient each
terminator pack with its identifying pin 1 dot facing the direction
opposite the power connector.
Any device driving the disk inputs should be of the open collector
type, capable of sinking at least 48 mA at a voltage level less than
0.5 V DC (7438 or equivalent).
Devices receiving Cheyenne Series disk drive outputs should be
SCHMITT trigger type (74LS14, 74LS240, or equivalent) to improve
noise immunity. The initiator should not load the bus with more than
one standard low-power Schotky transistor-transistor logic (LSTTL)
input load per line. The initiator should terminate all signals with
220/330 ohm terminators.
Buffering Scheme
----------------
The drive has a 64K (7120S or 7060S) or 32K (7080S or 7040S) First-
In-First-Out (FIFO) buffer. The buffer controller allows simultaneous
transfer either:
1.) to the drive from the initiator, or
2.) from the drive to the initiator.
32K or 64K Data Buffer and Look-Ahead Cache
-------------------------------------------
The target device anticipates sequential reads by placing all data on
an accessed track into the data buffer, making that data immediately
available to new READ commands. By temporarily placing small amounts
of data in high-speed memory, cache with look-ahead read decreases
access time to sequential data in the drive.
Neither head switching nor seeking occur during look-ahead
operations. Cache may hold the size of one physical track; from 1 to
42 sectors (7120S or 7060S) or 1 to 36 sectors (7080S or 7040S).
Power Connector
---------------
Power is applied through either:
J2, a 3-pin Molex connector (recommended mating connector; Molex
PN 39-01-0033).
OR
4-pin AMP connector (recommended mating connector: AMP PN 1-480424-0,
using AMP pins PN 350078-4). This power connector conforms to the
industry-standard 4-pin power connector and provides proper mating
with the 3-pin on-board Molex connector.
Electrical Interface
--------------------
SCSI uses single-ended drivers and receivers which allow a maximum
cable length of 18 feet (5.48 meters) from the first to the last
device (up to 7 devices) on the bus. The drive interfaces to the
SCSI host via a 50-pin keyed ribbon cable; Maxtor recommends the 3M
PN 3425-3000 cable connector.
All assigned signals are terminated with 220 ohms to +5 volts and
330 ohms to ground at each end of the cable. SCSI requires removal of
the two terminator networks on the drive when the drive is between
terminated devices on a SCSI daisy chain. Terminators are fragile and
must be removed carefully. Save them for later use.
All signals driven by the drive are open collector and have the
output characteristics as follows.

Air Filtration System
---------------------
All Cheyenne Series drives are designed to operate in a typical
office environment with minimal environmental control. Over the life
of the drive, a 0.3 micron filter and breather filter (located within
the HDA) maintain a clean environment to the heads and disks.
Read/Write Electronics
----------------------
An integrated circuit mounted within the sealed enclosure (near the
read/write heads) provides one of four head selection (depending on
the model), read preamplification, and write drive circuitry.
Read/Write Heads and Disks
--------------------------
Two or four, low-mass, low-force minicomposite metal-in-GAP (MIG)
read/write heads record data on the 3.5" diameter disk(s). Maxtor
uses a sputterred thin-film media on all disks for Cheyenne Series
drives.
Voice Coil Actuator
-------------------
Cheyenne Series drives employ a rotary voice coil actuator which
consists of a moving coil, an E-block or actuator arm assembly, and
stationary magnets.
The actuator moves on a low-mass, low-friction center shaft. The low
friction generated contributes to fast average access time and low
power consumption.
Automatic Headpark and Lock
---------------------------
Immediately following power-down, dynamic braking of the spinning
disks delays momentarily and lets the heads move to an inner
mechanical stop. A small fixed magnet holds the heads in place as the
disk spin down. The heads release only upon reapplication of power.

Multi-Initiator Support
-----------------------
The drive provides full multi-initiator support with command queuing
for up to seven initiators. The target device can accept up to six
commands (one from each remaining initiator) while processing a
command from a seventh initiator.
How Look-Ahead Cache Functions
------------------------------
In the absense of an error, corrected data, or an interrupt command,
the drive caches not only requested sectors, but "look ahead" and
caches data from the sector that follow. (Look-ahead cache reads
across track boundaries.) The look-ahead feature prepares the drive
to transfer cahed data when the host request it, and so prevents
access time delays.
Drive Meachanism
----------------
A brushless DC direct-drive motor ratates the spindle at 3,525 RPM
(7120S and 7060S) or 3,703 RPM (7080S and 7040S). The RPM specified
are 0.1%.
The dynamically balanced motor/spindle assembly ensures minimal
mechanical runout of the disk(s). A dynamic brake provides a fast
stop to the spindle motor upon power removal. The speed tolerance
includes motor performance and motor circuit tolerances.
Defect Management
-----------------
REASSIGN commands push data down within the cylinder to maintain
sequential order and assure maximum performance. Format and geometry
parameters are user-configurable to allow customization.
The 7120S has 4 spare sectors per cylinder; the 7060S has 2. The
7080S has 2 spare sectors of cylinder; the 7040S has 1. These spare
sectors are located at the end of each cylinder.
Data Encoder/Decoder
--------------------
The data encoder/decoder, a single semi-custom integrated circuit,
employs an RLL encoding scheme and provides all clocking necessary
for synchronization. This circuit interfaces to the data sequencer
and either encodes or decodes serial data to or from the HDA.
Power-Up Sequence
-----------------
DC power (+5V and +12V) may be supplied in any order. Both power
supplies must be present and within the tolerances of the power
sensing circuit before the spin motor will operate. Once power is
applied, the actuator lock automatically disengages. The drive then
performs a recalibration sequence to track zero, spins up, and
becomes ready in 10 sceonds. The drive executes its recalibration
sequence whenever power is applied or the SCSI START/STOP command
is invoked via the SCSI bus.
Regulatory Compliance
---------------------
Maxtor Cheyenne Series drives comply with relevant product safety
standards such as UL, CSA, and TUV rules and regulations. As
delivered, Cheyenne Series drives are designed for integration before
use. They are Class B computing devices built in compliance with FCC
rules and regulations, Part 15, Subpart J, governing the EMI of
computing devices. Canadian Emissions Statement: This digital
apparatus does not exceed the Class B limits for radio noise
emissions from digital apparatus as set out in the radio interference
regulations of the Canadian department of communicaions.
