A sub-frame with tapped holes is provided with each drive and permits
base or side mounting. The frame is fixed to the module via shock-
absorbing mounts. The drive MAY BE ORIENTED IN ANY AXIS. When
installing into an enclosure, at least 0.1 inch clearance must be
maintained around the entire drive to allow vibration isolation and
to prevent obstruction of the breather filter and the creation of
 ground loops.

The drive is mounted using 6-32 inch UNC screws with a maximum thread
 engagement depth of 0.25 inch.

NOTE: The drive installation must provide adequate air flow to ensure
that the maximum HDA temperature does not exceed 60*C.

 Half Height 5.25" Mounting Frame
 --------------------------------
As an optional extra, a mounting frame is available which when fitted
to the drive meets the form factor requirements of a "half height"
5.25 Winchester disk drive. The drive can be mounted using 6-32 inch
UNC screws with a maximum engagement depth of 0.25 inch.

 Multiple Drives
 ---------------
Up to seven drives may be radially connected to a single host
adapter. The adapter itself requires a unique SCSI address. RO 3000S
assignment is achieved by placing jumpers on the SCSI selector.

 Connectors
 ==========

 DC Power
 --------
DC power is provided by a four pin AMP Mate-N-Lok connector (P2/J2)
part number 350211-1 mounted on the solder side of the board. The
recommended mating connector is AMP part number 1-480424-0 utilising
 AMP pins part number 350078-4.

 Interface Connector
 -------------------
The RO 3000S disk drive interfaces to a host using a 50 pin, non-
shielded flat ribbon connector. This connector is designated J1 and
connects to the drive via connector P1. The pins are numbered 1
through 50. Pin 2 is located on the end of the board furthest from
the DC power connector and is marked. The recommended mating
connector is 3M ribbon connector. P/N3425-3000.

 Indicator LED
 -------------
The drive has a single LED visible through the front facia. This LED
will only be on when the drive is selected. At initial switch on the
LED will flash on and off until the drive has completed its power-up
routine. The LED will them remain off until the drive is selected.
The LED is also used to flash fatal error messages if the drive were
 to develop a fault.

 Electrical Interface
 --------------------
The basic operating configuration consists of a host computer, host
adapter and the RO 3000S disk drive. The host is a computer system,
the host adapter is an interface between the host's and the disk
 drive.

All signals are active low and use open collector drivers. The bus
should be terminated at both ends with 220 ohms to +5V and 330 ohms
to ground at each end of the cable.

 Output Characteristics
 ----------------------
Each signal driven by the RO 3000S has the following output
characteristics when measured at the drive's connector.

Signal assertion = 0.0 volts dc to 0.4 volts dc.
Minimum driver output capacity = 48 milliamps (sinking) at 0.5
                                      volts dc.
Signal negation = 2.5 volts dc to 5.25 volts dc.

 Input Characteristics
 ---------------------
Each signal received by the RO 3000S shall have the following input
characteristics when measured at the drive's connector.

Signal true = 0.0 volts dc to 0.8 volts dc.
Maximum toatl input load = -0.4 milliamp at 0.4 volts dc.
Signal false = 2.0 volts dc to 5.25 volts dc.
Minimum input hysteresis = 0.2 volts dc.

 Terminator Power (Optional)
 ---------------------------
The RO 3000S is configured to supply terminator power,(TERMPWR), with
 the following characteristics.

VTERM = 4.0 volts dc to 5.25 volts dc.
800 milliamps minimum source drive capability.
 1.0 milliamp maximum sink capability.

 Hardware Implementation
 -----------------------
SCSI is implemented on a 50-way bus which has multiple independent
interchangable slots. The main advantage of a bus is that several
tasks can be interleaved simultaneously on the bus. The RO 3000S may
operate in any of the configurations shown.

 Introduction
 ------------
The RO 3000S interfaces to a host adapter according to the proposed
ANSI X3T9.2 Standard (SCSI). The SCSI-bus consists of 18 signal
lines. Nine control the bus, nine are used for an 8bit bi-directional
data interface, plus a parity bit. All communications on the bus is
asynchronously by means of the REQ/ACK handshake. The RO 3000S should
be connected to the bus with a 50-pin flat ribbon connector.
Single ended drivers and receivers allow a maximum cable length of
 six metres (20 feet).

 Model Description
 =================
The RO 3000S represents Rodime's latest advance in innovative
technology, offering an arbitrating 3.5" Winchester disk drive with
SCSI (Small Computer System Interface) and embedded drive controller,
realising formatted capacities of up to 70MB.

Through the use of a rotary voice coil positioner and a closed loop
servo positioning system the RO 3000S brings true high performance
and reliability to mini and micro computer systems. Other design
features include a 4 Kbyte, FIFO data buffer for rapid data transfers
and complete host software device independence by implementation of a
common command set. The drive and controller use VLSI and surface
mounted component techniques to contain these features within the
 standard 3.5" form factor.

Like all Rodime's disk drives, the new series features rugged
construction and few internal parts making them suitable for the
harsh environment encountered by portable computers.

 ECC Error code correction
 --------------------------
Error code correction (ECC) is a function of the disk controller
circuit. Serial data is run through a 32 bit ECC generator. The poly-
nomial used will correct up to 11 bit single burst errors and can
 detect double burst errors.

 Defect Handling Overview
 ------------------------
Rodime undertakes testing on the RO 3000S disk drive, using both
analogue and disgital techniques, to identify suspect areas on the
disk surface. These are known as media defects and are considered to
be unreliable areas on the disk surface, for data recording purposes.
These media defects are printed on a label fixed to the top cover of
the drive. This defect map, as it is known, specifies defects in
terms of cylinder, head and bytes from index. The exact location of a
disk flaw will always be the same, as index is a timing signal which
marks a fixed reference point of the drive. This same information is
also recorded on a special maintenance track on the drive.

 Factory Test
 ------------
During the Rodime factory test, the RO 3000S is formatted using 512
bytes per sector. This realises 26 sectors per track, plus one spare
sector a total of 27 sectors per track. The drive is now formatted
and fully tested allowing the initiator access to all physical
sectors. Any defective sectors are marked as bad. An algorithm then
calculates the optimum sector layout to skip any bad sector and
 conform to the interleave factor.

 Error Conditions
 ----------------
If a fatal error occurs the drive will remove power from both the
voice coil and spindle motors and flash an error code on the front
panel LED. A four bit binary code is used to display the error
(long flash = logical 1, short flash = logical 0) with the most
 significant bit (MSB) occuring first.

the drive can only be achieved by power off, then on again, or by
asserting and releasing the SCSI RESET signal.
