 Positioning Mechanism
 ---------------------
The stepper motor positions the read/write heads.

The heads are mounted on a carriage driven by a stepper motor and
a capstan wound by a metal band. The winding and unwinding of the
 metal band determine the positioning.

 Drive Mechanism
 ---------------
A brushless DC spindle motor speeds up the disk until they reach 3573
revolutions per minute. Such speed is controlled by a locked-loop
circuit that has as reference a quartz frequency.

 Heads and Disks
 ---------------
The read/write heads are of the Winchester type and fly at a height
of 0.4 m from the disk surface. The disks are made of aluminium
and the surface is coated with a sheet of ferrous oxide specially
lubricated to permit contact of the head with the surface during
 start and stop phases.

 Filters
 -------
 The drive has two filters:

An absolute filter mounted inside the cover to filter the air flow
generated by the disks rotation speed.

A compensation filter mounted on the cover to equalize pressure with
  ambient air.

 Connection Mode
 ---------------
The drives are connected in daisy chain on control signals and
radially on read/write signals. The maximum number of connected
drives is 4. The maximum lergth of the daisy connection cable is 6
meters (18 feet). Radial configuration cables must be the same
length as in daisy chain. In either case, the maximum length should
be no more than 6 meters.

There is also the possibility of a radial connection on the command
channel. When the jumper is set, all signal outputs are activated,
even when the unit is not selected.

 Control Lines
 -------------
All the following lines are present in the 01J connector. The
electrical specifications for these lines are as follows:

 Low Level = 0.0 VDC to +0.4 VDC -48mA
 High Level = +2.5 VDC to +5.25VDC +250 A

 Drive Select Lines
 ------------------
These lines when at a low level, permit the selection of the drives.
When selected, only one of these lines will be at a low level. The
peripheral remains selected when this line is kept at a low level.

No more than one line must be at low level.

The selection of the drive is made via dip switches mounted on the
 PCB.

On a daisy chain configuration the resistors must be mounted only
 on the last drive.

 Cables
 ------
Connection with the 01J and 02J has to be made with a Flat Ribbon
cable or a Twisted Pair cable with a 105 ohm impedance.

Connection with the 03J has to be made with a Twisted Pair cable.

 General Description
 -------------------
The HD 662 is a random access magnetic storage unit with 2, 5.25 inch
 diameter, non-removable disks.

The 4- head unit, mounted on a carriage driven by a stepper motor
with a band actuator, moves on disk surfaces and stops in any of the
612 cylinders. An appropriate area is used for the shipping zone.

The disks are mounted on a spindle fitted directly on the DC
 brushless motor shaft.

The disks, heads and carriage are contained in a sealed chamber. This
chamber is made of a die-cast aluminium cup-shaped baseplate,
specially treated to prevent contamination, and its cover. Within
this chamber, the air blow through a class 100 absolute filter
 recirculates in a contaminate-free environment.

On the outer side of the baseplate are mounted:

 - the stepper motor
 - the spindle motor
 - the electronics is composed of: stepper motor drive circuits,
actuation, data channel, spindle motor speed control, and a
microprocessor to control the main functions.

The logical interface is industry standard and is composed of two
connectors. A standard connector is also used for DC voltage
 requirements.

The physical interface is compatible with all 5.25 inch Winchester
drives with stepper motor actuator that use industry standard inter-
 face.

Control lines from drive to controller
 --------------------------------------
These lines are transmitted by a line driver with an open collector.
On the controller they have to be received by a Schmitt trigger
 (74LS14 or equivalent).

Line impedance is terminated with a 220-330 ohm resistor pack.
