OKIDATA disk drives are shipped with a switch that allows a unit to
respond to a request for drive 0 through 3. If the drive you are
installing is the only hard disk, then DIP switch 1 should be turned
"ON". Switches 2, 3, and 4, should be turned "OFF". (For PC AT type
systems, DIP SW2 should be on; the remaining switches should be OFF.)
The DIP switch pack is located on the printed circuit board near the
larger cable connector at the rear of the unit. The white numbers on
the switch pack correspond to the drive ID as below.

Note: SW5 (switch 5, if it is present on your drive) controls read
data gating. It is only used with special controller boards that
allow daisy chaining of the data cable (J2). In normal installations
(IBM PC and compatibles) SW5 remains in the OFF position. SW6 is not
used, and should always remain in the OFF position.

OKIDATA hard disk drives can be mounted in any of three positions.

 Cabling
 -------
Pin 1 of both edge connectors is furthest away from the power supply
connector. Although these connectors have key slots nearest to pin 1,
most cable connectors do not, and can be installed in the wrong
manner, resulting in improper operation. Be certain to check the
orientation of the edge connectors to determine which is pin 1.

 Termination
 -----------
Each OKIDATA drive has a cable termination resistor pack located
between the larger cable connector (J1) and the dip switch pack. The
terminator is a long, black plastic, ten-pin resistor pack pack. It
is removable. Only the last drive in a cintrol cable string should
 have the terminator installed. Most PC applications require 1 drive;
therefore, the terminator should be installed.

 Installation
 ------------
When installing a disk drive into a PC-Type cabinet, be careful not
to allow the components on the circuit board to come in contact with
the cabinet frame. This can easily damage the drive's components or
the drive controller circuit board, or cause electrical shorts.

Be certain that the disk drive is fully supported in the cabinet so
that the drive cannot move once it is placed in its installed
position. Many IBM PC style cabinets have predrilled holes that
enable hard disk drives to be secured to the PC cabinet very easily.
We recommended that hard disk drives be secured to the base of PC
 cabinets.

The screws used to mount the drive should not penetrate the drive
frame by more than 0.15 inches. The size and type screws used are
 typically #6-32 X 1/4" machine screws.

The IBM PC AT and the Compaq Desk-Pro use slide rails to mount disk
drives in their cabinents. The AT and Desk-Pro rails are not inter-
changeable. The rails are secured to both sides of each drive and the
entire unit is then slid into the cabinet. Drives used in the desk-
pro are secured with a screw. Drives used in the PC AT are secured
with a screw and a clip.

OKIDATA OD526/OD540-R HARD DISK DRIVE INSTALLATION MANUAL

 Failures
 --------
OKIDATA disk drives feature extensive power-up self tests to detect
any potential operational problems. As a unit powers up, the front
light flashes at a constant rate, Whne the self-test is complete the
front light will either turn OFF or stay ON depending on the system
 to which it is connected.

If, however, the drive light continues to flash 30 seconds after
power on, the drive has determined a failure condition. The number of
flashes between pauses signifies the ERROR CODE (EC) detected.

These self test monitor input power (EC 1), recalibrate the drive,
seek, read servo data from each head at different cylinders, and
optimize the unit for temperature variations. Many of the test per-
formed are continued during normal operation to track changing
 temperature conditions.

The following list briefly describes the error codes and their
meaning. The number before each error represents the number of
flashes associated with the corresponding error:

   ERROR CODES
     1. Power Fault
     2. No Spindle Spin
     3. No Zones Detected
     4. No Track Zero Detected
     5. Incorrect Track Zero Phase
     6. Missed Servo Address Mark
     7. No Physical Index Detected
     8. Defective Read/Write Head
     9. Defective Read/Write Channel
    10. No Servo Micro-Step Convergence
    11. Micro-code Checksum Failure

At power-up, a 1701 display on your screen indicates that the hard
disk isn't available. It continues to display until low-level format
 is complete.

 1. Recheck the Drive/Controller Cabling
 2. Recheck controller shorting plugs and/or switch plugs
 3. Recheck the Drive ID Jumper Block
 4. An error code (Flashing light) on the drive after power-up will
also cause a not ready condition.

Disk drives shipped by manufacturers such as OKIDATA are tested on
special equipment to assure performace and to map any media defects.
The disk error location sticker on the cover of the hard disk drive
shows the results of media testing. Media defects are normal and
expected in any disk drive. Up to 1 defects per megabyte of un-
formatted storage is acceptable and does not affect the quality of
 the drive.

OKIDATA supplies 10 additional cylinders, numbered 640 to 649, to
 support alternate track assignment.

 System Integration
 ------------------
In order to use a newly installed HARD DISK/CONTROLLER combination,
you must run three utility programs.

 1. PRE-FORMAT
 2. FDISK
 3. FORMAT

The IBM supplied XT Hard Disk controller will not support an OKIDATA
 disk drive.
