 The BASF 6190 has 7 (seven) switches to select different options:

 Four switches (1 - 4) are used to set the drive address. Drive
 selection is performed when the DR SEL (drive select) signal
 corresponding to the switch setting is active.

 Switch 5 (five) allows to select a drive permanently and independent
 of the state of the DR SEL signals (only one drive). In this case,
 to light the green front panel LED the Unit must be additionally
 selected via Interface.

 Switch 6 (six) is used to control the condition for the spindle
 motor start. Depending on the switch setting, the spindle motor is
 started either with the first active going edge of the corresponding
 DR SEL signal or when DC power is provided to the drive (Power ON).

 Switch 7 (seven) enables the Extended Error reporting mode which can
 be used to receive additional error messages. For regular use of the
 BASF 6190 this switch must be open.

 Signal Active when Switch is closed.

 The BASF 6190 may be operated in any orientation. (For operation with
 boards up consult factory.)

 Housing
 -------
 The sealed module consists of an aluminium die-cast baseplate and
 cover. A closed loop air filtering system inside constantly cleans
 the air particles which may be generated by head to disk inter-
 ference. An absolute breather filter for pressure equalization with
 the ambient air pressure protects against environmental
 contamination.


 Physical Interface
 ------------------
 The physical interface between the BASF 6190 and the controller is
 done via three or four connectors. One provides the control and
 status lines through the "A"-cable which may be daisy chained.
 The second one provides the read/write signals to the star connected
 "B"-cable. The other connectors are used to supply DC power and for
 optional frame grounding.


 Interface Connector J1, "A"-cable
 ---------------------------------
 The "A"-cable is connected to the PC-board via a 34 pin card edge
 connector. Recommended mating connector is AMP P/N 88 373-3, or
 equivalent.

 The "A"-cable may be daisy-chained if more than one drive is
 connected to the controller. The cable may be flat ribbon or
 twisted pair with a maximum total length of 6m (20 ft).


 Interface Connector J2, "B"-cable
 ---------------------------------
 The "B"-cable is connected to the PC-board via a 20 pin card edge
 connector. Recommended mating connector is AMP P/N 88 373-6, or
 equivalent.

 The "B"-cable must be radially connected if more than one drive is
 connected to the controller. The cable may be flat ribbon or
 twisted pair with a maximum total length of 6m (20 ft). The cable
 impedance should be around 105 Ohms.


 Power Connector J3
 ------------------
 The DC-power connector is a four pin connector. Recommended mating
 connector is AMP P/N 1-480424-0 with pins 350078-4, or equivalent.

 Pin 4  + 5 VDC


 Frame Ground Connector J4
 -------------------------
 The Module of the BASF 6190 which is always connected to DC ground
 may be additionally grounded via the Fast On Terminal at the
 Connector side of the Unit. For normal usage this grounding is not
 recommended, however under severe noise conditions it may be useful.

 Recommended mating connector for J4 is AMP P/N 62187-1 or equivalent.


 Interface Electronics
 ---------------------
 The interface is compatible with the Standard ST 506/412 interface,
 but requires some minor modification to allow selection of all 9
 (nine) data heads.

 General Description
 -------------------
 The BASF 6190 uses the industry standard interface and dimensions to
 ease system integration. Up to four BASF 6190 may be connected to
 one controller.

 The use of high performance thin film disks and Mini Winchester heads
 together with a closed-loop air filtering system guarantees a
 maintenance-free operation throughout the drives lifetime and results
 in a MTBF of 12,000 working hours.

 Disk Media Defects
 ------------------
 Disk drives are allowed to have the following number of media defects
 when leaving the factory:

 Cylinder zero is delivered error free.

 Maximum number of defects per drive:   1 Error per Megabyte
 Maximum number of defects per surface: 15


 Drive Mechanism
 ---------------
 A "disk pack" consisting of a hub with 5 disks is mounted on a
 spindle which is directly rotated at 3600 rpm by a brushless motor.
 The motor current is commutated by Hall Sensors and related control
 electronics.


 Brake
 -----
 To reduce the stop time and thus protect the heads and media, a
 mechanical brake is provided that reduces stop time to about 13 sec
 and additionally provides a transport lock against carrier-
 induced spindle rotation.


 Read/Write Heads
 ----------------
 Because of their superior performance over conventional "Winchester
 Heads" the "Mini Winchester" type heads are used, giving high flying
 stability and readback amplitude together with low sensitity to
 HDI's.


 Fault Codes 1985
 ----------------
 The face panel LED which is red during power Up, is turned off when
 the Unit gets Ready and turn to green if the Unit is Ready and
 selected via interface. In case of any error the LED will start
 flashing in a certain "Morse" sequence thus indicating the type of
 error (last error is shown!). This flshing sequence is repeated until
 the unit is powered down or is reset (only write error can be reset).
 If a seek error occurred, an automatic recovery routine will take
 place during which the drive is not SEEK COMPL (seek complete). This
 recovery is retried 5 time (in extended mode only 1 recovery) before
 an errror is reported. All errors reported in normal mode, prevent
 the unit from save operation, while additional errors reported in
 extended mode give an indication of a condition which may later on
 lead to failures. Therefore extended error mode should only be used
 for test purposes and not regular operation.

 Fault Codes 1983
 ----------------
 The Select LED is used to flash error messages, in case certain fault
 conditions should arise. Error codes are presented as a Morse coded
 sequence, which os repeated continuously, only separated by a longer
 pause until the error is reset by a new seek command.

 Single Ended Signals
 --------------------
 All control input signals and status output signals are single ended
 and low active (except OP CBL DET). They must meet the following
 electrical specifications:

 Active:      0.0 to 0.4 VDC   I = -40 mA (max)
 Inactive:    2.5 to 5.25 VDC  I = +250 (open)
