 Active Termination (8-bit Drives)
 ---------------------------------
The drive can be configured to provide or not provide active
termination. The drive location on the SCSI bus and the method used
to terminate the SCSI bus (active termination or separate terminator)
determines how to configure the active termination feature of the
 drive.

 NOTE
Refer to your system or SCSI controller documentation regarding any
specific recommendations regarding drive placement on the SCSI bus
 and SCSI bus termination.

 SCSI ID 8-bit Drives
 --------------------
Each SCSI device on the bus must have a unique SCSI ID number
assigned to it. The drive can be configured for SCSI ID numbers that
 range from 0 through 7.

Set the SCSI ID for the drive at Option connector J3.

Configure the drive for remote (external) SCSI ID selection by
removing the SCSI ID jumpers (if present) from the referenced SCSI
ID pins. Then connect the leads from the external selection
switch(es) to the referenced pins. Observe the following guidelines
 while doing so.

 - ID Bit 0, at Pin 1, is the Least Significant Bit (and has the
   lowest priority).

 - SCSI ID Bits 0, 1, and 2 (pins 1, 3, and 5, respectively) are
active LOW signals. That is, the bit is a 1 if the corresponding
remote switch is closed to ground.

 - Use pins 2, 4, and 6 as the associated ground returns for ID bits
0, 1, and 2, respectively. The ground returns can be used
individually, or the ground returns of all three ID bits can be
   combined at pin 2, 4, or 6.

 Spindle Synchronization 8-bit Drives
 ------------------------------------
The drive supports synchronized spindle operation. Whether the drive
operates as master or slave is determined by the contents of the RPL
field in the Rigid Disk Geometry Page (04h) for the drive or the
Auto field of the Quantum (vendor) Special Function Control Page
 (25h).

The time interval between spindle synchronization checks is set using
the Spindle Sync Check Interval byte of the Quantum (vendor) Special
Function Control Page (25h) of the MODE SELECT command. Intervals of
5 to 60 minutes can be set.

The drive always maintains local speed regulation when no reference
 signal is applied.

When the drive operates as a master, it generates a spindle
synchronization reference signal (SPINDL_SYNC_REF L). This reference
signal is available as an output to other drives at Option connector
pins 10 and 19 (pins 10 and 19 are connected together on the drive).

When the drive operates as a slave, it looks for a spindle
synchronization reference signal (SPINDL_SYNC_REF L) as an input from
the master drive. The slave looks for this spindle synchronization
input at either pin 10 or 19 on the Option connector (pins 10 and 19
are connected together in the drive).

 CAUTION
All Atlas series drives can be connected for synchronized spindle
operation. Models XP31070, XP32150 and XP34300 drives must not be
used for synchronized spindle operation in conjunction with drives
from different model series or unpredictable results might occur.
For example, XP31070, XP32150 and XP34300 drives can be connected for
spindle synchronization in the same system, but they must not include
a synchronization connection to a Capella series disk drive (VP31110
 or VP32210).

 NOTE
When connecting multiple drives together for spindle synchronization,
be sure to use proper cabling techniques to avoid ground loop
 problems.

Attach the spindle synchronization (SPINDL_SYNC_REF L) connection
and associated ground connection at the Option connector. Pin 19 is
provided to permit the use of a 2-pin plug for the spindle sync
connections. Pin 10 i sprovided as an alternate spindle
synchronization connection to facilitate installations where a 10-pin
header is used to connect several remote features. The ground return
 pins are 2, 4, 6 or 20.

Atlas drives have three Spin-Up on Power On modes:

 - Option 1
Spin up occurs immediately when power is apploed

 - Option 2
Drive spin up occurs after a predetermined delay following power
on. The delay is equal to a user-specified multiplier, multiplied
by one plus the numerical SCSI ID of the drive. This will give a
   staggered spin-up in multiple-drive installations.

 - Option 3
Drive spin up is controlled by the START STOP UNIT command.

For Option 1, immediate spin up power on, install the jumper across
pins 13 and 14 of the Option connector.

For Option 2, spin up after a delay, install the jumper across pins
13 and 14 of the Option connector. Set delay parameters in the MODE
SELECT command, Quantum (Vendor) Special Function Control Page (25h).

For Option 3, spin up controlled by the START STOP UNIT command,
remove the jumper (if present) from across pins 13 and 14 of the
 Option connector.

Remote Busy and Fault Displays 8-bit drives
 -------------------------------------------
Busy and Fault status of the drive can be monitired remotely by
connecting remote (external) Busy and remote Fault display LEDs to
 the Option connector.

 Remote Busy LED
 ---------------
Connect the cathode side of the remote Busy LED to pin 9, BSY_OUT L.
Connect the anode side of the LED to pin 11, +5VDC OUT.

Connect the cathode side of the remote Fault LED to pin 7, FLT_OUT L.
Connect the anode side of the LED to pin 11, +5VDC OUT.

You can mount the disk drive in any position. LR models mount in RAID
storage subsystems. The drive (with bezel) attaches to the system bay
and accept #6-32 screws. Screws should not exceed 0.25 inch
(6.25 millimeters) in length, otherwise damage to the PCB may result.

Mounting brackets may be required when installing the drive in a
5.25-inch form factor bay. We recommended using brackets supplied
by Quantum Corporation to mount the drive. Otherwise, the drive's
isolation characteristics could be compromised. A bracket kit
including four screws is available from the Quantum Corp. The part
 number is 70-30695-01.

 CAUTION
The placement of the drive in the computer system must permit
sufficient air-flow to maintain drive environment temperature within
41*CF to 131*F (+5*C to +55*C) and maintain component surface
 temperatures below the maximums.

 CAUTION
Screw-length must not exceed 0.25-inch (6.25 millimeters); or the
 drive may be damaged (#6-32).
